Potty Training Blues

Okay, if there are any potty training experts out there, i'm in serious need of some tips. I've always heard to wait and train your kids until they're ready, and it will be ten times easier- so i've waited, and waited, and waited and then waited a little more..you get the picture! Carson is gonna be 3 next week and I'm SOOOO over changing his nasty diapers, but the kid does not want ANYTHING to do with his toilet! If there was potty training school, i'd send him. Well I decided that January was our month and I would buckle down and get serious. Yeah it lasted all of 2 days! He's had exactly one little tinkle in the toilet...THAT'S IT, ONE (accompanied by lots of dancing and celebrating i might add)!!!! One tinkle and probably about 7 hours of sitting on it- accompanied by lots of stories, books, eating and singing to pass the time. On very rare occassion he enjoys his time on the can- see pic above, but most of the time he hates it-see pic below, and I don't have a clue why??? He just hates even the suggestion of sitting on the toilet. It doesn't help that he apparently has a mega bladder, I don't know anyone else who will sit on it for 2 hours- yes 2 hours- while i'm pumping him with any and all fluids the whole time, but not a drop of anything. I must say, a dream for a road trip companion, but a nightmare for potty training. After our 1-2 hour attempts of sitting on it, i'll put his diapers (one time underwear, but that didn't go well:( ) back on and he does his business immediately. Now I know accidents happen, but after you've been on the toilet for 2 hrs....seriously, that's just flat out boycotting my training. So, i'm currently on vacation from training. I KNOW he can be ready, and he is totally excited about his big boy underwear, but he just can't seem to get over his strong dislike of his little toilet...Any ideas???

These are probably the two most hilarious pictures I've ever seen-do you realize that your kid is on the potty at the kitchen table? Seeing as I haven't dealt with this yet (YET being key), I have no suggestions.... I'm just wondering how you explain the toilet in the kitchen when people come over.

Brooke,

January is my month to potty train Brianne too. So far it hasn't gone very well and she is back in diaphers, but every now and then she will want to go. I don't know what to do either. I hear you are coming into town for the mart, we can chat about it then.

Luckily it went really well when I potty trained Gavin and I'm hoping that it will go just as well with Gwenyth since I will start potty training her soon. My suggestions: Get the book "Once upon a potty" by Alona Frankel. I found mine at Barnes and Noble. She has a boy version and a girl version and it's a cute little book that Carson will love and should get him excited to go potty. That's tricky about the super bladder. Maybe you could use incentives like a sticker chart, candy, or a toy? Definitely talk it up about being a big boy. I'm sure you have!Hang in there, it will click for him soon. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Brooke! The before and after (or should I say during) photos are sooooo funny! What a bummer about the whole potty training thing. Hopefully, he'll be on to it soon - for your sanity :) Talk to you soon :)

Oh I hear you. Potty training Emma was not fun. She finally was potty trained about a month after she turned 3. It was a little toilet that finally did the trick for us (I swore I wouldn't have one of those). But it looks like you have that! Good luck

Try the regular toilet and set the timer to go every 15 minutes. He will eventually go. We tried candy, stickers and the rest for Allie, but for some reason the timer worked better then anything. Even now when the timer goes off and she isn't in time out it reminds her to go to the bathroom!
